My Money Story
Financial coaching and community for BIPOC

Background and context

My Money Story is a financial tools startup focused on serving BIPOC making less than $70,000 USD per year. The team consisted of myself, an engineer, and the founding entrepreneur. I served as a product lead and UX design lead.

There were two areas of work I focused on:

Where we started

When I joined the My Money Story team, they'd already established a website and social media presence, as well as a prototype of Money Match – a program that paired up two similar users in a chat where a My Money Story certified coach could observe and participate in the conversation.

Since the concept had proven itself, the team wanted to productize the existing prototype by replacing the third party tools it was built with (like Zapier) with custom built features and tools. We also had some non-profit partners, and a goal of onboarding dozens of their customers to our service at a time.

This natural next step in product iteration would also help automate many of the currently manual processes. We needed to prioritize and scope a custom built MVP and explore and select possible approaches and solutions.

What I did

To kick off, I facilitated a story mapping session with our small, but mighty team and together we aligned on the most essential features for launch and our first few releases. From here, we each went on to assess our solution ideas against our business, user, and technical needs and constraints. (For example, a key decision hinged on whether we would host chat through an app, or connect users directly via obfuscated SMS – we needed to explore implementation, legal and policy, and more).

I spoke with folks who had participated in our Money Match program, and others who fit our user profile in order to gather both generative and evaluative feedback regarding our matching program and the supporting materials.

While the solution was coming into focus, I was also working on various visual design tasks, including creating a design system, content for landing pages, social media templates, print assets, and other materials from the new brand design the team had just received from another contractor.

The results

In the end, our initial app version included a personalized sign up flow and on-boarding experience for Money Match users to be matched and chat securely with their match and coach. We also built an admin dashboard for automated matching and messaging in order to bulk on-board and manage many customers at once.

Following and building upon the updated brand design package, I also redesigned the home page and other key landing pages, created several social media and graphic templates, and designed an accessible and beautiful design system for the new mobile web app.

Check out some of the highlights below!

We launched a new website and mobile web app for Money Match users to discover our program, sign up, and start chatting securely and privately with their new peer match and our certified coaches.

I also designed an admin website to further automate various manual processes, like matching two or more users into a chat group.

We also created an entire program of automated messages for 12 weeks worth of coaching advice for match pairs – all to reduce manual overhead and improve the UX.

I created an assortment of materials for My Money Story's nonprofit partners, including a landing page, print materials, and a monthly partner report where My Money Story coaches could update partners on their clients' progress.

Finally, I applied the new brand design to create social media templates, visual content and layouts for the website and print materials.
I also wrote content for the website and created resources for the team to use going forward, such as a photo library and Canva templates.
